Current Volunteer Opportunities!

The Woodson Marching Band cannot succeed without volunteer assistance from family members. There is a variety of volunteer tasks, beginning with summer car washes, Band Camp, Tag Day, and throughout the football and competition season. Family volunteers help students accrue points toward a Band Letter. We use Sign Up Genius for each event to manage volunteers and give proper credit.

Wednesday, March 15th. We need 15 chaperones please!  5 for each band!  It’s a work day.  Make arrangements now for the day or half-day off.

Performances are at Center for the Arts, George Mason University.  Park at Lot K if not riding the buses. Parents welcome to attend (whether or not you chaperone, but I hope you’ll chaperone too!)

Home games will require volunteers to help distribute marching uniforms, chaperone in the stands and help check in uniforms. There will also be a separate sign up to help run the concession stands. We also need help with Equipment!! Every home game will require help to set up the props, pit and other large items.

Equipment/Pit Team

Sign up to join the Equipment/Pit team for football games and competitions:

The percussion pit is bigger this year and there are more props so any time you can give to this fun team is helpful.  We need a minimum of 12 volunteers for each performance.

Football Games: Meet at the band room at 6pm to move band equipment to the field, as well as ensure all pit gear is in position for the halftime show.  At halftime, help move all pit equipment and some props to midfield for the band’s performance, then remove it when they finish.  In the event of wind, a few parents may be asked to hide behind a prop to hold it down.

Competitions: See opportunities to load the truck, help at the competition and drive (need 2 truck drivers for each). Some volunteers will ride in the truck, others drive themselves. Must wear pit shirt (provided), khaki pants or shorts, and brown shoes.

Band Patrons – Committee Chair Positions Open for 22-23

As we approach the final 3 weekends of the marching season, we thank the parents of seniors for your service to the band and look to the rest of you to prepare to take on several roles that will be open next year.  I know it seems early, but for the committees with big marching roles, NOW is the time to shadow.  Please let committee chairs know if you are interested in stepping into their position next year.

Remember they have been doing this a few years. You don’t have to do it the same way it’s always been done or just like the person you’re replacing.  You just need to love your kid and have a desire to help build the band program.  For additional questions about the committee chair positions, contact Carrie Klein at
